How to measure a yard on Google Maps
Last updated
Measure distances on Google Maps
- 1Open Google Maps on a computerZoom in on the property and switch to the Satellite layer so you can see the lawn edges.
- 2Right-click the starting pointChoose Measure distance from the menu.
- 3Click to add pointsClick along the edge you're measuring. Google shows the total distance at the bottom of the map.
- 4Multiply for simple shapesFor a rectangular lawn, measure the length and the width separately and multiply them for square feet.
Example: a back lawn measured at 62 ft by 38 ft is 62 × 38 = 2,356 sq ft. This only works for rectangles; curved lawns need an area tool.
Measure area on Google Earth
- 1Open Google EarthSearch the address and zoom in so the lawn fills the screen. A top-down view measures best.
- 2Click MeasureClick points around the edge of the lawn.
- 3Close the shapeDouble-click the first point. Area and perimeter appear in the panel; change the units from the drop-down.
- 4Subtract what isn't lawnMeasure beds, patios and the driveway inside the lawn the same way and subtract them by hand.
Google notes that its measurements are estimates, aren't a substitute for on-site or survey-grade measurements, and don't account for changes in elevation.
The faster way: a satellite lawn measuring tool
- 1Search the addressThe satellite map flies to the property.
- 2Trace the lawnChoose Area and tap around the lawn; tap the first point again to close it. The area shows on the shape as you draw.
- 3Cut out beds and patiosDraw a cut-out inside the lawn and its area is subtracted automatically.

| Google Maps (Measure distance) | Distance is documented; area is not | By hand | Free |
| Google Earth (Measure) | Yes: area and perimeter of a closed shape | By hand | Free |

Frequently asked questions
Does Google Maps show the area of a yard?
Google's help page for Google Maps' Measure distance tool only documents distances between points, shown in miles and kilometres. For the area of a yard, use Google Earth's Measure tool, which shows area and perimeter once you close the shape, or a satellite lawn measuring tool.
How accurate is Google Earth for measuring a lawn?
Google says its measurements are estimates, not substitutes for on-site or survey-grade measurements, and that area results don't account for changes in elevation. Trees and shadows can also hide lawn edges, so confirm the area on site before ordering sod, seed or fertilizer.
Can I measure my yard on my phone?
Yes. In the Google Earth app, tap points around the yard and connect back to the first point to close the shape and see its area. Satellite measuring tools that run in a mobile browser, such as SatelliteQuoter's, work the same way with taps.
How do I convert square feet to acres?
Divide square feet by 43,560. A 10,890 sq ft lawn is 10,890 ÷ 43,560 = 0.25 acres.
